Where it came from — Sousas Band (1916); Brass orchestra (unidentified, Edison Records), Franz von Suppé (1912). Oscar Gardner's 1915 ragtime piece "Chinese Blues", performed by Sousa's band in this recording from early 1916. Some of these old tunes had a surprisingly long and varied life; in the mid-1930s this one re-emerged as Little Brother Montgomery's "Chinese Man Blues".
